After the discovery of gold at his nearby sawmill in 1848, Swiss immigrant John Sutter established Sutter’s Fort near the intersection of the Sacramento and American Rivers which became the mining and trading epicenter of the California Gold Rush. Located in what is now midtown Sacramento and surrounded by modern buildings, Sutter’s Fort remains untouched. The park offers educational activities for kids, and docents in costumes tell stories about what life was like when California was just “the land out west.”
