Of all the Basque restaurants in Bakersfield, Wool Growers is arguably the most popular. Opened in 1954, the family-run restaurant offers an authentic Basque dining experience in a fun atmosphere. Each meal begins with vegetable soup, sourdough rolls, beans, tomato salad, green salad, the vegetable of the day and french fries all served family style. Add a large plate of pickled tongue for an extra charge. After this “setup,” entrees include your choice of fried chicken, pork chops, lamb chops, various steaks, shrimp scampi and oxtail stew. One thing’s for sure — you certainly won’t leave hungry.
